Kurash: Sittingbourne Warriors Take Titles
Five members of the Sittingbourne Warriors wrestling club based at the swale martial arts club attended the second Islam Karimov Kurash tournament. This was run by the British Kurash association and was held at Dartford Judo Club.Kurash is a jacket wrestling style on the similar lines of judo but only standing and no groundwork. The sport comes from Uzbekistan and is a very new sport to this country, one that Uzbekistan is very proud of, thus the president of the country allowed his name to be used in the title. This sport gives the members of the swale martial arts club another style to try along with judo, sombo, combat wrestling and jacket wrestling. The five members were Colin (two fingers) Carrot, Danny Carrot, Ashley Costa, Alyx Costa and Debbie Jackson. The five brought back to the club 7 medals, 2 gold’s and 5 silvers and were also awarded with some traditional robes, headresses. Colin again proved to be a very good multi-sport individual taking two silvers one in the under 90 kilos and one in the veterans. Following in dad’s footsteps came Danny who also took two silvers, one in the junior section and one in the senior under 73kilo section. The dynamic duo father and son team are probably one of the most talented multi-skilled jackets wrestlers in Kent. Next up came Ashley he took gold and the British title in the under 73 kilo, not enjoying the stop start of Kurash but enjoying the standing work. As groundwork is not one of his favourite parts of jacket wrestling this suited him very well, as it only consists of standing fighting. Next up came the two girls who fought in the girls open weight group Debbie proving too strong for the other girls she took the gold and the British title adding another medal to her tally. Debbie starts very slow but when she lines somebody up she follows through very well, thus throwing both girls with outright win throws. Alyx came second in this open group only being beaten by her teammate Debbie but she proved too strong for the others. The club next year has the different styles again for its members to try. Along with the jacket wrestling the club itself has a very busy year ahead with 12 judo events already in its calendar along with British and English title events booked for Sittingbourne.
