British CombatSombo Association/International Budo Federation 1st English u16’s Sombo Wrestling Championships East Street Sports Centre, Sittingbourne, Kent Saturday October 6th 2002 After the big success of the British Open Sombo Wrestling where for the first time since the British Sombo Federation (1985) was founded Juniors outnumbered Seniors and the Senior section was the biggest we have seen in years. The BCSA/IBF decided to organise an English Championships just for its own members, this proved to be a good decision with over 50 juniors participating. Most of the children were members of the various Judo Clubs, which are affiliated to the IBF; nearly all the Judo clubs in the IBF now practise Sombo Wrestling as part of their curriculum. It was pleasing to see that the HammerLock Wrestling Society who specialise in Ring Wrestling and put on a lot of Wrestling shows entered a competitor, Michael Shepherd, who went on to win the heavyweight section. H was not used to wearing a jacket so his wrestling skills were very unorthodox compared to the other fighters, when he threw one of his opponents with a perfectly executed Suplex it had the audience clapping with appreciation. Michael convinced a lot of doubters that Ring Wrestlers are not all show and no substance, we look forward to seeing a lot more Hammerlock wrestlers. Most probably the best match of the day was between Sam Miller Sittingbourne and James Wood Bexley these two young lads put everything into their match the end result of 20points to 19 points emphasise the amount of throws that were put together. This sort of scoring would never be seen in a Judo match and the fact that both these lads were experienced Judo players you would have thought that it was just another Judo match. Not so there was all sorts non-Judo moves being performed, this match created a lot of converts to the Sport of Sombo wrestling. This event will definitely become part of the IBF/BCSA Calendar. The Warriors Combat Wrestling Club Sittingbourne dominated the event as expected.
