Saturday November 18th

The BCSA sort permission from the British Sombo Federation (the governing body for the sport in the UK) to start organising Sombo Wrestling tournaments permission was granted. Our first UK Open was restricted to Men only and was deliberately set to go on a few weeks before the World Championship, so as to give the British Team a pre World comp. The Four Men’s categories were Light, Middle, Light Heavy and Heavy. The competition was a great success with some phenomenal Sombo Wrestling being seen. There is insufficientspace to go through ever match so I have restricted the report to the finals.

LightWeight Final Danny Carrott (Warriors Sittingbourne) v Dean Luckhurst (Bournemouth)

This was going to be a cracking good final 17-year-old Chris Bates, who trained by top international Paul Sawyer, was the favourite to win. Danny trained by Martin Clarke was entering his first major senior tournament. Danny proved every one wrong by giving one of the best performances of his very young career. At 15 years of age he fought a very mature match and defeated Chris 12 pts to nil. As Danny’s strength gets better he is going to be a major force to be reckoned with.

MiddleWeight Final Paul Sawyer (Bournemouth) v Ashley Costa (Warriors)

Veteran World Champion Paul Sawyer was out for revenge as he had lost to Ashley for the first time in the British earlier on in the year. Ashley at 20 has the ability to be world class but his performances are very erratic, when he takes an event seriously i.e. early to bed etc he is unbeatable. This was the case this time, paul treated him with a great deal of respect not making any mistakes for Ashley to catch him with. In the first minute of the bout caught Ashley with a leg grab to score 1 point, from then on he played a very tactical and negative game doing sufficient work not to get a penalty but doing enough to nullify Ashley’s efforts. This tactic worked with Ashley frustrated he made a silly move with only a few seconds to go and Paul scored a further point winning 2pt to Nil.

LeigthHeavy Weight final Tim Thomas BSF National Coach (Spartan) v Colin Carrott (Warriors)

Tim Thomas as the Official National Coach for Sombo Wrestling was taking a risk actually taking part; it takes a lot of courage to be in his position and compete. Tim is known for his expertise in ground fighting and submission holds. So Colin Coach martin Clarke told him to keep away from the floor and go for the throws. Colin done this but quarter way through the match he tried a rather lazy rice bail throw (sacrificial throw) only to be countered by Tim who scored 4pts. That momentary slip of concentration cost Colin the match. Tim tried to get one of his famous armlocks but all credit to Colin he was not successful. 4pt to Nil win for Tim.

Heavyweight Final Steve Sweetlove Bedford v Neil Arkley Warriors.

This was the one we had all been waiting for Police Sergeant Steve Sweetlove a very fit seasonal International Sombo Wrestler and Judo player moved out of his normal weight class to take on the heavyweights and was giving away 35 kilo in weight. He was up against first time Sombo Wrestler Neil Arkley who weighed in at 125 kilo. Although this was his first Sombo competition Neil is no stranger to jacket wrestling being a 4th dan black belt Judo and World Masters bronze medallist. Both men locked up and for the first minute they were like a couple of Bull Elephants feeling each other out. Steve made the first positive attacks trying a double leg pick up and for a moment it looked as it was going to work, but Neil’s weight and experience stopped the move. Not only did he stop it but also it used it to his advantage to drive Steve back scoring 4pts, Neil held on to his advantage to take the match much to the annoyance of Steve. When Steve is behind he puts in his best performance he tried some tremendous Inner Thigh throws and it was only Neil’s experience stopped him being thrown. Hopefully we will see a lot more of Neil in the future.

The Warriors Club now head the BSF league table and if we do well in the forthcoming English championships we should win the league.

Martin Clarke and some of his BCSA members will heading of to the USA in late June early July to compete in the World Masters Judo and Sombo Wrestling Championships. On the Saturday they will be in Pheonix Arizona for the World Masters Judo and the following Wednesday they will be Albeque New Mexico for the World Masters Sombo Wrestling.
