1st Northumberland CombatSombo Wrestling Results

Saturday May 12th 2001

Dear Editor

The British CombatSombo Association organised its second CombatSombo Wrestling Tournament, this time it was in Ashington Northumberland and entitled the Northumberland Open. BCSA Northern Region Rep Gary Pollard organised this event on Saturday May 5th.

CombatSombo Wrestling rules are slightly different to Sombo Wrestling rules as they involve strangles, face bars that can be done on the floor and in a standing position; it also has 2 x 3 minute rounds. This style of wrestling is finding a lot of new recruits from the submission-wrestling world.

The competition was a relatively small affair as the BCSA is still coming to grips with the rules. Steve Sweetlove, who is chairman of the British Kurash Association plus an international Judo and Sombo Wrestler, refereed the event with his wife Sue organising the competition pool sheets. Steve was well pleased with the event and commented, “that the rules could only enhance a jacket wrestlers skills”.

Tournament organiser Gary Pollard has done an extremely good job in promoting the BCSA in the North; he is not only a coach but proved he could fight by winning gold in his event. The wrestlers from Ashington made everyone welcome and the competition cemented some new friendships. It was a pleasure to see some real sportsmanship nobody booed, jeered or complained about the refereeing and every fight received a round of applause, a taste of Northern hospitality at it is very best.

The BCSA British CombatSombo Wrestling Championship will be in Sittingbourne on Sunday November 4th 2001.
